More than 24 M € seized and 11 M € confiscated for the benefit of the State since the creation of the GNDOCB



Gardai said the seizure of € 488,000 following an operation at Port Tunnel Plaza in recent days brings the total cash seized by Garda National Drugs & Organized Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) staff to more than 24 million. ‘euros.

The GNDOCB was established in 2015 and over € 11 million was confiscated for the benefit of the state following the conclusion of the relevant legal proceedings initiated by the GNDOCB at that time.

During 2021, the GNDOCB says it has seized a total of € 5,639,310 and £ 38,571 (UK), bringing the total amount of cash seized by the GNDOCB, from its inception on March 9, 2015 to the end of 2021, to € 24,300,241, as well as £ 264,326 (UK) and $ 3,721 (US), which represents an exceptional level of achievement.

In 2021, a total of € 8,230,886, £ 142,520 (UK) and $ 23 (US) were confiscated for the benefit of the state following the conclusion of the relevant legal proceedings initiated by the GNDOCB , bringing the total of the sums seized by the GNDOCB and subsequently confiscated from the State, since its creation on March 9, 2015, to € 11,186,954.48.

In 2021, sixteen (16) people were convicted by higher courts for alleged breaches of the provisions of the Criminal Justice Act 2010 (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing), as amended, resulting from investigations carried out by the GNDOCB, associated with the money they seized.

Deputy Commissioner John O’Driscoll (Organized and Serious Crime) who has been given a leading role within An Garda Síochána, regarding the fight against organized crime, said:

“Asset-based interventions against targeted organized crime groups are a priority in strategies adopted within organized and serious crime and by the Garda National Drugs & Organized Crime Bureau (GNDOCB), in particular, with the aim of seek to exhaust the funding of organized crime and in order to dismantle the organized groups involved.

On July 5, 2021, at the Special Criminal Court, a forty-year-old man was sentenced to 7 years in prison, after having been in possession of more than € 350,000, on May 11, 2020.
