I own a hotel and this is how guests can get a free room upgrade
THE owner of a boutique hotel shared some tips on how guests can get a free upgrade to their room.
If you are planning to spend a night or two in a hotel soon, these tips might help.
From checking in at the right time to not being too greedy, there are some simple tips guests can do to help them find a nicer room, without paying for it.
Hotel owner James Marshall shared his tips on the Quora Q&A site.
Check in at the right time
James’ first tip is when is the best time to check in.
While it might seem logical to check in early in the day to be the first customer to request an upgrade, checking in as early as possible is not the best solution.
It’s actually best to check in later in the afternoon.
He said: “Check in later today, not immediately when the recording starts.
“If you request an upgrade too early in the day, the hotel may decline because it still believes there is a chance it will sell the empty rooms.”
Don’t be greedy
If you’ve booked the cheapest room and are asking to be upgraded to the Presidential Suite, you might be laughing at the hotel lobby.
James said it was best to ask sensibly and not be too greedy.
He said: “Request a one-level room upgrade [above yours].
“Don’t book their cheapest room and ask for their best room when you check in.
“This will probably annoy the front desk staff.”
Know what is available
James’ next tip is to find out what rooms will be available before you ask.
If the hotel is full enough, your chances will be slim.
He said: “Check their website or other booking sites to confirm they have a lot of availability.
“If it’s a busy night with only a few rooms available, your chances are not good as they can anticipate last minute walk-in bookings.
“In which case, they’ll want to reserve their last rooms to provide those last minute sales.”
Following the advice above, it makes sense to book at a time when there will be more rooms available.
The more rooms there are, the more likely you are to be upgraded.
James said: “Book your stay during an off-peak period when your hotel is more likely to have available rooms.”
If you’ve just gotten off a flight and are feeling groggy, looking good might not be high on your agenda.
But it can be beneficial to put on a nice shirt and smile at hotel staff.
James said, “Dress neatly and ask politely.
“Hotel staff face a range of different personalities at the front desk, but a polite, friendly and easy-going person will always be appreciated.”
A former hotel manager revealed how you can still get free breakfast at the hotel.
But be forewarned, a former hotel employee explained why you should never eat hot breakfast – especially eggs and waffles.
