  • Senior executives from leading provider FM Farnek will present a 360-degree market proposition to hotel owners and operators at The Hotel Show

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Farnek, a leading smart and green facility management company based in the United Arab Emirates, will participate as a sustainability partner in this year’s hospitality show, which opens on Tuesday 24 May at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Farnek, which recently launched a dedicated stand-alone hotel management company called “Trendz”, offers a unique 360-degree service for hotel owners and operating companies with a focus on sustainability, technology and l outsourcing, three of the most important trends in the hospitality industry today.

“Guests today are demanding eco-friendly, technology-driven hotels that offer value for money. This puts pressure on hotel operators to showcase credible environmental programs and investments in technology while pursuing profitability,” said Walter Knight, Director of Hospitality at Farnek.

Founded over 40 years ago, with 8,000 employees, Farnek has traditionally provided labor and outsourcing services, such as cleaning, security and property maintenance, all areas of the hotel operations that have become integral to sustainability and profitability.

Additionally, underscoring its 360-degree proposition, Farnek has been chosen to manage Expo Village’s 2,273 apartments, including reservations, concierge, reception and housekeeping services.

In terms of technology, Farnek has developed an in-house application called “Flexi-Guest”, which digitizes the guest journey from pre-arrival to departure. The app interfaces with a hotel’s property management system (PMS), offering guests a range of services from uploading travel documents, such as vaccination certificates, ordering a car to arrival, room service and laundry. The hotel app can also send automated e-mail updates and alerts to the guest, as well as e-check-in documents, e-bills, and e-receipts, all in one convenient space.

Sustainability is another key issue for hotels. Speaking at the Hotel Show, at a conference titled Sustainable purchasesa 360° overview of ESG-compliant purchasingNadia Ibrahim, Associate Director of Consulting and Sustainability at Farnek, will share her thoughts with industry professionals on the adoption of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) standards in the sourcing process and on how they can be integrated into a hotel’s supply chain. process, as well as working with suppliers to reduce negative environmental and social impacts to the business through responsible sourcing.

“With the UAE’s strategy to become Net Zero by 2050, it is essential that hotels consider the impact of their operations on the environment and put in place a strategic roadmap to reduce their emissions. The UAE government cannot achieve its sustainability goals without the support of the private sector,” said Ibrahim.

Hotel owners and operators will also need to implement strategic plans to launch large-scale renovation and energy efficiency projects, where sustainable design and energy efficient performance will be of paramount importance.

Integrating with Building Management Systems (BMS), Farnek’s HITEK digital solution is fully equipped to identify, design, deliver and finance energy reduction for and on behalf of building owners, creating buildings that are more profitable and a cleaner environment.

Farnek will also focus on outsourcing, particularly in housekeeping, an area that Farnek believes training is of the utmost importance. “Outsourced personnel must be highly skilled in all areas of their work; it is fundamental. But it’s equally important that they understand the essence of the brand they work for and how to become an integral part of the hotel team, not just a uniformed contract worker,” Knight commented.

The tweeted invitation for a teaching at Cornell University featured a photograph of “Pillar of Shame,” a sculpture that commemorates the deadly 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, which authorities removed from the University of Hong Kong the last year.

The subject: “Academic freedom, global hubs and Cornell’s involvement in the People’s Republic of China”.

The speakers: Three scholars from Cornell University with China-related specialties and Yaqiu Wang, senior China researcher at Human Rights Watch.

The event was staged as a rebuke to the university’s growing involvement in China and reflected a broader trend of calls for colleges and universities to cut ties with Chinese groups linked to human rights abuses. and to divest from them. The call echoes past demands for universities to sell their investments in fossil fuels and apartheid-era South Africa.

Since last year, Cornell administrators have pushed the development of collaborative programs with Chinese universities. Despite student and faculty concerns about China’s record of repressing academic freedom, Cornell, famous for its hospitality courses, continued with a dual degree program in hospitality and business, the Cornell Program. -Peking MMH/MBA. Graduates would earn a master’s degree in business administration from Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management in Peking and a master’s degree in hospitality management (MMH) from Cornell University’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration.

The Ivy League School in Ithaca, New York, also continues to expand a recently launched research exchange network with institutions around the world. Called Global Hubs, the network includes six schools across China.

At the April 29 event, Eli Friedman, Associate Professor and Chair of International and Comparative Labor at Cornell’s Industrial and Labor Relations School (ILR School), provided insight into the history of academic engagement. American in China, while Peidong Sun and TJ Hinrichs, both Associate Professors in the Department of History at Cornell, spoke about the state of academic freedom in China.

Richard Bensel, a professor of American politics at Cornell and moderator of the workshop, told VOA Mandarin that the event was intended to not only “examine primarily Cornell’s involvement in the People’s Republic of China and academic freedom,” but also to convey “the basics of information about this involvement in the Cornell community.”

Wang spoke about censorship and self-censorship among overseas Chinese students.

She told VOA Mandarin that “university programs in China are not the problem.” Instead, she said the problem is that they don’t adhere to the same principles of academic freedom and freedom of speech that universities uphold in the United States.

The Cornell Riddle

In July 2021, Cornell’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration and Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management launched the Cornell-Peking MMH/MBA program, targeting middle to senior management in the hospitality and service industries .

Bensel and some other members of the Cornell Faculty Senate have expressed concern about the joint program. They feared that faculty members who traveled to China would run into legal trouble due to the country’s constrained academic environment. In 2018, the IRL School at Cornell suspended two exchange programs with Renmin University of China due to academic freedom concerns, according to The Washington Post.

The Faculty Senate continues to suspect that the true purpose of the program is not academic exchange but revenue generation for Cornell, according to Senate meeting transcripts.

The dual degree program is expected to bring in nearly $500,000 for Cornell beginning in September 2022, with the potential to increase revenue as enrollment increases.

In March 2021, the Faculty Senate voted 39 to 16 against the proposed partnership with Peking University, according to the school’s newspaper, The Cornell Daily Sun. However, the “senate sense” vote carries no legal imprimatur, so the Cornell administration has approved the project, according to a university press release dated May 28, 2021.

In the fall of 2021, Cornell’s vice provost for international affairs, Wendy Wolford, introduced another initiative to the faculty. Cornell planned to create a network, the Global Hubs, with top universities in countries including China.

According to Faculty Senate records, many members were concerned that Cornell did not mention any standards or requirements regarding academic freedom and freedom of expression when selecting partners for the Global Hub.

In December, the Faculty Senate passed a resolution urging the administration to consult with the Senate before developing hubs in the future, according to Senate records.

The resolution specifically calls for the continued expansion of Cornell’s collaboration in China.

Despite this resolution, headquarters continues to pursue the dual enrollment project because, as Wolford stated in an email to VOA Mandarin, “We at Cornell are very proud of our active international community and our collaborations; these connections are especially important at a time when some would suggest we look inward, building walls rather than bridges.”

Faculty members who supported the dual degree program stressed the importance of engaging with China, according to a transcript of the Faculty Senate meeting dated March 10, 2021.

“If you want to see change happen in China, pledges are the only way,” said Connie Yuan, a professor in the Department of Global Development. “Present alternatives to Chinese students and let them decide if this is the alternative that will work for them, and they decide which way to go.”

She also asked whether concerns about human rights abuses against Uyghur minorities in China’s Xinjiang region, raised by professors opposed to the program, were influenced by what she called Western media bias.

“I think the news from the West and the East (is) biased,” she said, laying out another reason she voted for the program. “I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. And I think it’s the Chinese government’s attempt to contain terrorism, but maybe they’ve gone a bit too far.”

Push for divestment from China

Cornell faculty aren’t alone in worrying about US universities’ business dealings with China. Since last year, professors and students at several US universities have launched initiatives to have their schools audit China-related investments.

On April 26, the Athenai Institute, a student-founded nonprofit that is pushing American universities to divest from China, tweeted an open letter to the presidents and boards of major public universities, calling for a break with China.

“We call on you to take all possible steps to investigate your institution’s endowment, including the endowment of any institutionally linked foundation, for ties to entities complicit in the Uyghur genocide, and to divest yourself of such assets,” wrote the group.

US politicians, including former Under Secretary of State Keith Krach, signed the letter.

John Metz, executive director of the Athenai Institute, said that in addition to moral reasons, universities should withdraw their business relationships with China for their own business interests, because investments in a country implicated in human rights abuses man could be subject to future sanctions.

Students from Georgetown University, George Washington University, the University of Virginia and the University of California at Los Angeles are mobilizing to divest from China.

Metz told VOA Mandarin that “not only do (schools) have the potential to be leaders on this issue, but it also makes financial sense to avoid risk and essentially avoid unintended divestment, and to avoid selling these investments after they have fallen 60 or 70%.”

In December, the administration of the Catholic University of America began independently reviewing its endowment for links to Uyghur human rights abuses in Xinjiang, according to The College Fix website.

In January, Yale University’s Investor Accountability Advisory Committee began investigating potential investments in Chinese companies linked to human rights abuses, according to the Yale Daily News.

Metz told VOA Mandarin that the divestment movement is still in its early stages. But, he said, “we think divestment as a tactic has a lot of potential to spread beyond universities to other institutional investors, like pension funds, and eventually to Wall Street. .”

IHG Hotels and Resorts has announced its fifth hotel in Adelaide and sixth hotel with the Pelligra Group with the signing of Holiday Inn and Suites Mawson Lakes.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held the day before the 2022 Australasian Hospitality Industry Conference and Exhibition (AHICE), was attended by South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, the CEO of IHG EMEAA , Kenneth Macpherson, and SVP General Manager – Japan, Australasia and Pacific, Leanne Harwood and hotel owner Ross Pelligra.

Holiday Inn and Suites Mawson Lakes, owned by a joint venture between the Pelligra Group and Bruno Muscatello, is due to open in 2024. Located in the northern suburbs of Adelaide, just 20 minutes from the CBD, the 150-room hotel Holiday Inn brand features including an open lobby, as well as an all-day dining restaurant and lobby bar, conference rooms, and a gymnasium.

With six hotels now open or signed, the Pelligra Group is one of IHG’s largest partners in Australasia, and there are ambitions to grow the partnership significantly. Already the group, with its joint venture partners, welcomed the brand new Holiday Inn Werribee in 2021, featuring Australia’s first open lobby, and took the lease of the Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport in 2019, with plans to Complete renovation of the property to bring it up to world class Holiday Inn standard. By the end of 2023, it will also open Holiday Inn Melbourne Richmond, Crowne Plaza Melbourne Carlton and Holiday Inn Dandenong.

Speaking at the launch, Ross Pelligra explained his passion for the potential of North Adelaide.

“When we first invested in South Australia at the Holden plant we were excited about North Adelaide with the growth, the people and the growth of the industry and we also noticed a lack quality infrastructure,” said Pelligra.

“We looked around to see where we could have an iconic building for the next generation, as we take a long-term view with everything we do. As I started to do my research I could see there was an opportunity here and my next call was to Leanne and it started to show there was a great need for the hotel with research showing that ‘there was no demand for one but actually two hotels as no new hotels have been built there in the past 10 years. We see this as a long-term, multi-generational project that will unlock North Adelaide. For us, as a company, we see this as an off-the-shelf project that is needed today as the city grows – it takes a hero in the region to lead the city. »

Macpherson was proud to celebrate the signing of Holiday Inn and Suites Mawson Lakes.

“I want to congratulate Ross and the Pelligra team for investing in tourism and hospitality in South Australia. Today’s announcement is more than words – today we are innovating and saying with confidence that this great hotel is well and truly on track to open in less than two years,” said Macpherson.

“We can see an incredible future for tourism in South Australia with drivers such as the University of South Australia, hospitals and industry close by, we are confident that this brand new Holiday Inn will be a very sought after for business and leisure travellers.

“Excitingly, this will be IHG’s fifth hotel in Adelaide, underscoring our position as one of the leading hotel operators in this great city. It complements our existing hotels – the iconic Intercontinental Hotel Adelaide and newly opened Crowne Plaza Adelaide, Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets and Holiday Inn Express Adelaide City Centre.

IHG’s partnership with the Pelligra Group has grown over the past five years, now marking the opening and signing of six hotels in Australia.

“I know the Holiday Inn and Suites at Mawson Lakes will show the best of the brand, just as Pelligra has done with previous Holiday Inn properties, especially the new Holiday Inn Werribee which is a shining example of the brand and c ‘is the first in Australia with the signature Holiday Inn open lobby,’ said Macpherson.

“I am delighted that we can continue this growth with the signing of this great hotel as well as the upcoming openings of Holiday Inn Richmond, Crown Plaza Melbourne Carlton and Holiday Inn Dandenong and I think it is fair to say to Ross that we have ambitious plans to grow this portfolio together. Team Ross and Pelligra, thank you for your great partnership with IHG and for your shared commitment to opening amazing hotels together. We can’t wait to see this stunning property come to life.

Leanne Harwood, IHG Hotels & Resorts Senior Managing Director for Japan, Australasia and the Pacific, said: “To be here today, announcing a new state-of-the-art hotel with one of our great partners, Ross Pelligra, is incredible and a true testament to the trust and strength of our relationship. We have a vision to create cutting-edge, world-class hotels and the Pelligra Group clearly has an affinity for our brands, and we would like to grow that together. It’s an honor to be here today alongside Ross and his team and to build on these foundations that we have built together.

The hotel will be located next to the University of South Australia’s Mawson Lakes campus, Mawson Central shopping center and Parafield Airport and close to RAAF Base Edinburgh, Lyell McEwin Hospital , several major manufacturing and logistics centers, making it an ideal base. for those in town for business or leisure.

IHG has had one of its biggest years of hotel signings and openings in recent years and with nearly 150 hotels open or signed in Australasia alone it is considered one of the leading operators hoteliers in the region.

Fairview Park, Ohio

Trespassing, Brookpark Road

On April 19 at 10:53 a.m. an undesirable guest was reported at the Ramada Inn. The hotel management asked the man to leave. The man was also evicted from the property the day before by officers. Hotel management explained that the 42-year-old Cleveland resident was supposed to cut the grass on the property the day before and had not finished the job. The police were called and the man was evicted from the property. He came back and was loitering and acting erratically. He was carrying a large metal key and is believed to have broken or removed two security cameras around the Ramada.

An officer told the man to drop the key, and he complied. The man was very agitated and couldn’t stop moving. He spoke extremely fast and couldn’t explain why he was at the hotel. Officers then searched him for weapons. Officers noticed an orange needle cap sticking out of the man’s right jacket pocket. They found a small plastic bag with white residue inside the man’s wallet. Another search revealed a needle without a cap and three counterfeit $20 bills in his possession. The man was arrested.

Fairview Park Police

Aggression, Lorain Road

On April 20 at 11:06 p.m., a man and woman were reported in a physical altercation in the parking lot of the Fairview Park Library. When officers arrived, they found a 40-year-old man from Oakwood Village and a 36-year-old woman from Cleveland walking down the driveway from the parking lot toward Lorain Road. Officers arrested the couple. The two were yelling at each other and the woman yelled that she wanted the man to give her phone back. He then handed her the phone. Officers spoke with the man who told them they were drinking. He went through the woman’s phone and found things he didn’t like. He got angry and started arguing with her. He then confessed that he put his hands on her and grabbed her by the shoulder and then by the neck. He appeared to be intoxicated and began to repeatedly yell at the woman. He was arrested and handcuffed. The woman said she was trying to get away from him, but he repeatedly physically assaulted her, choked her and pushed her to the ground where he tried to drag her face down the sidewalk.

Break and enter attempt, Lorain Road

At 4:12 a.m. on April 24, officers responded to an alarm at Minotti’s Beverage. Officers observed a van traveling slowly westbound on Lorain Road and noted a partial license plate. When officers arrived at the beverage store, they found a shattered front window of the building but no entry had been obtained. Officers from the North Olmsted Police Department also saw the van traveling west on Lorain Road on the border between Fairview Park and North Olmsted at high speed. North Olmsted officers attempted to stop the van. The driver of the minibus refused to stop. After a chase, the two occupants, a 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old man from Cleveland, of the van walked away to the intersection of Columbia and Lorain roads. They were arrested. After further investigation, it was discovered that the van had been stolen hours earlier in Parma.
